Project two asked us re-imagine the topographic form and composition of the existing landfill, with the intent to design a new site that considers the following: faster remediation or phasing, beauty, ecological diversity, programming, and efficiency. With such a vast quantity of trash, there are numerous opportunities for earth-molding--repositioning, deleting, inserting, and disrupting. Below, I explore the spatial, material, and functional outcomes of new design ideas. I designed a monumental mountain of trash that forces everyone who passes to look at it--to look at their trash, to contemplate their waste. The mound sits in a 20’ deep rain water collection pond with a diversity of plants for phytoremediation to treat any toxins that may wash off the mound. The unjulated edge of the mound breaks off into engineered “islands” made of various natural materials, allowing the viewer to see how water effects land.
