The site of our studio investigation was Seneca Meadows Landfill, a 300 acre landfill located 45 miles north of Ithaca, NY. It is currently the largest active landfill in NY, receiving 6000 tons of waste daily. We viewed the landfill as a cultural object, a monument, and a burial ground. This first project is devoted to site analysis--understanding the scalar relationship of the mounds to the surrounding environment, abstractly exploring distinct fields of textures, colors, and shapes, noting the directionality and intersections of various vectors and points, defining and mapping edges and boundaries, and assessing the hierarchies of physical elements and mental perceptions.
