Section Comparisons

This collage visually explores the unique geography of upstate New York in comparison with Seneca Meadows Landfill via sections. The time scale representation of the landfill--current site section, proposed design section, and a section of the proposed design 500 years into the future, is overlaid on top of a geological section of Cayuga Lake, located just east of the landfill. The lake is a remarkable 500’ deep, which contrasts greatly with the shallow depths of the designed lake, as well as the 300’ tall mound of trash. This project focuses on the palimpsestuous nature of a land burried in geological hisotry, topped with the man-made layers of trash, seen through a sublime lens. The tabula rasa is also considered as the glaciers literally scraped away the earth, just as we erased the current landfill to give way to new designs. Scales and plant types are also compared with the addition of 3 botanical drawings: an aquatic plant, a marsh plant, and a land plant to bring about the discussion of land vs. water.
